Some Guidelines for the Volunteer
A Volunteer should:
-
Be dependable. We can't emphasize this enough. Others are depending on you, especially the students.
- Sign in each time you come.
- Be patient with the rider.
- Do nothing with the rider without the instructor's permission.
- Direct the rider's attention to the instructor's direction throughout the lesson.
- Notify the instructor of any discomforts of which the rider may complain.
- Reinforce instructions to riders who have hearing problems.
- Know how to assist as a sidewalker.
- Know how to assist a rider mounting from either the ramp or ground.
- Know where to stand while leading during exercises, mounting, and dismounting.
- Lead the horse an arm's length away from your shoulder.
- Stay even with the horse's head when leading.
- Become familiar with the riding equipment and its use.
- Always maintain a positive attitude.
A Volunteer should not:
-
Leave the rider for any reason.
- Reprimand the horse while a rider is mounted.
- Pull on the horse's head while doing exercises or mounting and dismounting.
- Visit with other volunteers or the rider during class instruction.
- Allow the horse to be closer than one horse's length to any other horse.
- Allow riders to mount or dismount without the instructor's attention.
- Switch sides unless asked to do so by the instructor.
- Allow a child in a wheelchair to hold lead rope or reins of a waiting horse.
